CHROMOSOME DOUBLING

CHROMOSOME DOUBLING

Most plants are diploid, meaning they have two pairs of each chromosome. By treating plants with mitosis inhibitors, polyploid plants can be obtained. The polyploidization of plants can have several reasons. A higher ploidy often results in a firmer plant structure with larger flowers. It may also be needed to restore fertility, enable a hybridization, or to achieve a sterile triploid plant in the end.
